John 14-16 Part III

This study overlaps the last one to connect the two and as a matter of review and to continue to build on things learned previously. When reading about the Holy Spirit, always keep in mind the basic understanding of a spirit.

John 14:16: the Father will give “another Comforter (parakletos g3875) which will abide with us forever
1John 2:1: My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate (parakletos g3875) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1. Who is the Comforter to be sent back after Jesus leaves?
{The cross completed Jesus in the fullness of the Father: and having been perfected (completed), He came to be the Author of eternal salvation..., Hebrews 5:8-9 LITV. Jesus came back a different person - inwardly.}

14:15: If ye love me, keep my commandments.
2. What is the source of Jesus commandments? John 14:24; 15:15 (John 7:16; 8:26; 12:49-50; 10:32; 14:10)
{Jesus is the truth, John 14:6, and his words are spirit, John 6:63, therefore the Comforter, called “the Spirit of the truth,” John 14:17, comes via Jesus Christ from the Father. The Greek word rendered as “commandments” would be better translated as “precepts” contained in figures or metaphorical speech. Mark 10; 5 - marriage, cf Matthew 5:27-28, 31-32; the entire tabernacle & it services are spiritual precepts, Hebrews 9:19 + 9 (parable), 24 (figures).}

Read John 15:1-6:
3. Who do the husbandman, vine & branches represent? Verse 1, 5

3a. How did Jesus say the disciples were made clean? Verse 3

3b. How are branches that abide not in Jesus gathered and cast into the fire? James 3:5-10; Jeremiah 23:1, 14, 16, Isaiah 42:25
{It is the tongues of men, liken to fire, speaking falsehood that deceive the unwary. The “fire of hell” taken back to the Hebrew is a figure taken from the “fire of the valley of Hinnom,” where Judah at one time sacrificed her children, Jeremiah 7:30-32. We can choose to yield our way of thinking to other men, or to the living God.}

Read John 15:7-12:
4. How do we bear fruit in order to glorify the Father? Verse 7
{Jesus’ words are referred to as “commandments in verse 10, & explained in #2 above. Cf Pruverbs 25:2 + Revelation 1:5-6}

John 14:26: the Father sends another Comforter in Jesus’ name.
5. In one, above, John identified the Comforter as Jesus. What does it mean for it to be in Jesus’ name? Revelation 3:12
{Jacob was to be called by a new name, Genesis 32:24-28, & fulfilled when his household put away all idols & he built an altar to God in Bethel (house of God), Genesis 35:1-10. Applied allegorically today: New character, Revelation 2:17. The character of Jacob was completed by his actions, or works; Jesus’ departing, John 16:7, was a result of going to the cross & finishing the works of God, John 19:30.}

Read John 14:16-17: Jesus said, you know him (Comforter, Spirit of the Truth), he dwells with you & shall be in you.
6. Who is Jesus telling the disciples that they know? Verse 23; John 16:13-15
{Jesus told Phillip that to know him was to know the Father, John 14:7-9. The Spirit of the truth is from the Father & Jesus possesses it & shares it. It is why he said, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak - what Jesus receives from the Father, he gives to us & we share with others.}

Read John 15:26-27: (the Spirit of the truth will testify about Jesus, & you will testify)
7. When was this verse fulfilled for the disciples? Acts 2:1-4

7a. Does this apply to the body of Christ today? Ephesians 3:14-21
