John 14, 15, 16 - Part I
In my Father’s House

In these chapters, the primary focus will be on the Holy Spirit. This is more of a doctrinal study, as there are differences of opinion as to the understanding of who/what is the Holy Spirit, also referred to as the Comforter and the Spirit of Truth. The hope is to walk away with a more clear understanding of the Holy Spirit.

Read Matthew 16:13-20:
1. Who is the rock on which the church is built? Psalm 118:22; 1Corinthians 10:4; Ephesians 2:19-20; Isaisah 28:16
{John 1:42: And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon g4613 son of Jona. You will be called Cephas g2786" (which, when translated, is Peter g4074 [meaning “a stone”]). G4613 from h8095 = hearing; g2786 from h3710 Chaldee = a hollow rock. For Peter to become firm & steadfast, he had to be filled with Christ’s spirit. All of the Apostles were considered stones in the foundation, Ephesians 2:20.}

1a. What is the rock on which the church is built? Matthew 16:16
{The rock (a spiritual concept) on which the true church is built is the fact of Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God - not an idol that does not breathe or talk, 1Kings 18:26. Do churches deny this truth today?}

1b. What are the “keys to the kingdom of heaven given?” cp Lk 11:52 & 8:10 + 17:20-21; Rv 1:9

Read Luke 5:36-39: Jesus only taught the people in parables (Matthew 13:34, 36; Mark 4:34) and explained them to those who asked for the meaning. The symbols contained in them are to teach spiritual lessons of the heart.

2. These two parables are illustrating the same point - what is it? Cloth: Revelation 19:7-8; wine: Micah 2:11
{Clothing is a symbol for the character formed from a person’s way of thinking. To be a part of God’s kingdom, we must be totally purged of the old way of thinking by the new, Eph 4:20-24. Wine is understanding for the mature. Literally, as wine ages, the taste improves; so it tastes better than new wine. Jesus came to explain the change in the law from keeping the letter to understanding the spiritual; but the majority of the Jews desired the old ways. It is no different today, most will desire the old way of understanding rather than accepting the new. God’s thinking is different from man’s, Isaiah 55:6-11, & not readily accepted. To be a part of His kingdom, we need to shed the old and be clothed with the new.

Read John 14:1-3: Literal of verse 2: In My Father's house are many dwelling places. Many versions make it sound more like a literal house (NIV, NKJV, YLT, ASV, NLT, etc).

3. Since Jesus only taught in parables, what does a house represent? 2Corinthians 5:1; 1Timothy 3:15; Psalm 27:4-5.
{The house in which we are to dwell is explained by 1Tim 3:15. We leave our house, Mt 24:17-18, & enter God’s house, Psalm 127:1; Proverbs 24:27. In God’s house dwells: Glory, honor Psalm 26:8; beauty Psalm 27:4; defense, fortress Psalm 31:2; fatness, abundance Psalm 36:8; place of praise Psalm 84:4; holiness & length of days Psalm 93:5.}

3a. What is the dwelling place Jesus prepared so that we could be where he is? Matthew 7:24-27; Philippians 2:5
{To dwell in the Father’s house is to think like Him; it is being one in the Father & Son, John 17:21 - we want to built our house on the Rock, 1a above, by understanding the real Son & the cross.}

Read John 14:4-6: (the disciples are still not grasping all that Jesus is saying)
4. What does Jesus mean by him being the way, the truth and the life? Luke 10:22-24
{Jesus came to reveal the Father: His character, way of thinking, the truth of it & the eternal life that is obtained by those who receive it, John 5:22-27 - the Father is the source of life only through His Son - Jesus Christ, John 15:5.}

Read John 14:7-14: (word known/know g1097 in verses 7 & 9, is to know by experience)
5. How might Phillip & the disciples have known Jesus by experience? John 2:11; 4:39; 7:31; 11:43-45

5a. How might we know Jesus by experience today? John 8:31-32; 13:34-35
{By living & sharing the gospel we experience Jesus personally, as well as through others}
